The 1001Tracklists Charts — Explained! (3)

The 1001Tracklists charts have become an increasingly important metric in the dance and electronic music world. These charts indicate the tracks that have the most traction among DJs when looking at different scopes of DJ play data. Check out our last 1001Tracklists article for an introduction on the importance of DJ support.

As the go-to place for monitoring when DJs play tracks in their livesets, radio shows, and mixes, 1001Tracklists is unique in that you can easily see all of the DJ support for each track in one place. There are 4 primary charts on 1001Tracklists that are based on this data, and we’ll break them down for you.

The Top Overall, Newcomer, and Trending Tracks charts are all based on unique DJ support — meaning the number of different DJs who have played a track, not the number of tracklists that it’s been in. So if 1 artist plays a track 3 times, and another artist plays it 4 times, this counts twice towards the chart because it’s been played by two artists. If 5 artists each play the track once, then this counts 5 times towards the chart.

Eligibility for the Top Overall, Newcomer, and Trending tracks charts are as follows:

  • Top Overall Tracks: All tracks are eligible. The main chart counts all plays within the last 4 weeks.
  • Newcomer Tracks: Only tracks that have been first played within the last 21 days are counted, and tracks are in the chart for a maximum of 21 days. Early plays are being excluded, like those from the producers themselves, when calculating the first play date for chart eligibility.
  • Trending Tracks: This chart is based on the tracks played within the last 2 weeks by the 50 most viewed DJ/radio shows on 1001Tracklists.

The Most Heard Tracks chart is a little different in that it is based on how often users on 1001Tracklists open the track player to listen to a track. The total plays of each track within the last 5 days are counted.

Now that we’ve explained how each chart is calculated, let’s discuss the nuances of them. The Top Overall Tracks chart showcases the tracks receiving the most support in a 4-week period. These are typically tracks which have recently been released and are in the phase where they are receiving the most DJ support, as the track is now accessible to everyone. Really big tracks can have a long lifespan in the Top Overall Tracks chart. For example, in 2019, FISHER’s “Losing It” was in the Top Overall Tracks chart for an incredible 45 weeks!

The Newcomer Tracks chart narrows the timeframe to right after the track first starts seeing DJ support. This often means that the tracks are in the promo phase, and have not been released yet, or they are charting right after they have been released. It is called the Newcomer Tracks chart since all of these tracks are brand new. Making it into the Newcomer Tracks chart is a great early signal that the track is a success in the eyes of DJs, and often indicates that there will be more charting to come as the track continues to breathe life.

The Trending Tracks chart illustrates the tracks receiving the most DJ support in the biggest radio shows, in terms of the shows’ viewership by fans on 1001Tracklists. These shows include Hardwell On Air, Tiesto’s Club Life, and Heldeep Radio — the show from Oliver Heldens, who took home first place in this year’s Top 101 Producers ranking. Making it into the Trending Tracks chart means that the track is a hit amongst the world’s biggest DJs.

And lastly, the Most Heard Tracks chart serves as a way to indicate which tracks are drawing the most interest from the users on 1001Tracklists. 1001Tracklists has a diverse audience base, with a truly global presence. The one constant among the audience is that it’s the people most interested in what artists are playing — it’s an audience composed of superfans, people dying to see what tracks their favorite artists are playing, and also artists themselves either using the site for inspiration and discovery, or to see which artists are playing their own tracks. The Most Heard Tracks chart tends to be dominated by tracks with real longevity as well as tracks that were climax moments in headlining artists’ festival sets. Cracking the Most Heard Tracks chart often means that you’ve produced a highlight moment hit among both artists and fans!

All of these charts can be found directly on the 1001Tracklists homepage and charts page, and Songstats monitors and notifies about 1001Tracklists chart positions. In fact, Songstats even displays a larger set of chart placements than what’s available on 1001Tracklists, so you can find out first on Songstats that you’re charting on 1001Tracklists.
