Critics Consensus

Pet owners should love it, but Marley and Me is only sporadically successful in wringing drama and laughs from its scenario.

Marley & Me | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Deborah Ross The Spectator OK, I admit I cried a small bucket at the end... but at least I hated myself for it. This is bland and obsequious tripe or, as my own dog would say, "Woof!" Laura L This movie is a lovely story of Jennifer (Jennifer Aniston) and John (Owen Wilson) who start their family by adopting a poppy. The unexpected is that this poppy was a little bit more energetic than his brothers and sisters, and because of this, there are several comic moments. Being a romantic comedy, the audience knows what to expect - it's hard to be surprised. Still, the movie surprises with the couple having a child, even when I wasn't expecting to see it anymore; then several! :-) Another surprising element (and very well interpreted) is the natural aspect of the story: the ups and downs of marriage, the moments of tension, and those of relaxation, joy and sadness. However, despite all these, I had a good laugh from the beginning to the end as if these moments were well 'calculated' and 'distributed' throughout the movie. It's a great movie for children, animal lovers, and families. Enjoy it! Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Irma Very delicate movie. Is not exactly Bergman, but it does its job quite good. It is the story of a couple going through life, and at the beginning of their merried life got a dog. If you do not cry at the end, you are not a human being. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/24 Full Review EllaJo r That dog was horrible, why would anyone want a dog after this 😕 😬😆 Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Teen Home F This is a movie that I am more complex feeling about than most. On the one hand the sub-genre this film occupies is one I have much disdain for but on the other this is one of the films that started said sub genre, and it has something about it I just cant seem to scratch. This movie is very predictable which is to be expected as all of these dog-centric drama comedy's all follow roughly the same plot. Movies like A Dogs Purpose Turner and Hooch and this one all relay and the same tired tropes and only get people in the seats by killing a dog at the end. However this one is a bit special, on the one hand this movie is much more drama than comedy which I did not expect and is a welcome change of pace. Owen Wilson does a good job as always as did Jennifer Anniston, the plot while predictable was still heartfelt and much less about the dog than one might expect. This is a movie I recommend to people but struggle to see myself watching again any time soon. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/18/23 Full Review Cara B The heart-wrenching truth that dogs should never depart this world, leaving us with a profound sense of sorrow and indignation, makes for a truly tearjerking experience.
