Arsenal winger Sagoe Jr signs new contract before joining Shrewsbury on loan

Latest transfer news (30)

Arsenal winger Charles Sagoe Jr has signed a new contract and joined League One side Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old spent the second-half of last season on loan at Swansea City in the Championship, where he made two appearances.

Sagoe Jr has made one competitive appearance for Arsenal but did feature for the side during their U.S. pre-season tour.

Shrewsbury manager Paul Hurst said: "I'm really pleased to get Charles Sagoe Junior on board because I think we have been lacking options in that wide area. He is a player that we have been after for some time - we were interested in him during the January window.

"Now we need to get him up to speed because his pre-season has been a little bit different due to him going away with Arsenal.

"But we will do all we can to get him up to speed as quickly as possible - whether that is off the bench or whether that is starting games and seeing how long he can go for. We are delighted to get him in."

Palace winger Rak-Sakyi joins Sheffield United on loan

Latest transfer news (66)

Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi has joined Sheffield United on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old made six Premier League appearances last term before missing the next 18 games with a hamstring injury.

Prior to that, he scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in 49 games on loan at Charlton Athletic.

Blades boss Chris Wilder said: "This deal was particularly pleasing to get over the line just because of the nature of the interest in Jesurun.

"His loan spell at Charlton really put him on the map and last season he enjoyed some Premier League experience, so with that in mind, he was always going to command interest."

Rak-Sakyi said: ""The plan that the gaffer had for me when we spoke was good to hear, that was why I decided to come. It was my first choice, I didn't take in the outside noise, when I spoke to the gaffer I knew it was the right place for me.

"I want to play more football, this is about me getting out and playing as many games as I can. The fans will see me work hard for the team, I'm a player who likes to express myself, get on the ball and make things happen."

Gallagher to not face Man City as Atletico move stalls

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed Conor Gallagher will not play for Chelsea this weekend as they face Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

Gallagher is training away from the main squad at Cobham following his return from Spain after his move to Atletico Madrid stalled.

Atletico had a bid in the region of €42million (£36m) accepted for Gallagher last month with the England international also agreeing personal terms and undergoing a medical after flying to the Spanish capital last week.

“Conor is back and is training in this moment a little bit apart,” Maresca said previewing Sunday's game. “He is doing some medical tests and training and he won't be involved for this game also because you know better than me in this moment he is trying to find a solution with club. Villa preparing for the season with Carlos - Emery

Latest transfer news (90)

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery says he is preparing for the season with Diego Carlos after talks over a move away.

As The Athletic reported at the start of the summer, Villa were open to selling Carlos and have received interest from a number of clubs, including Fulham, who had an opening offer rejected for the centre-back

However, Emery, speaking ahead of Villa's trip to West Ham United on Saturday — where Diego Carlos will be part of the travelling party — insists he plans on having the 31-year-old in the squad this season.

"Diego Carlos is completely with us now," said Emery. "Yes, we were thinking maybe he would leave in case he had a good offer from another team and of course, we were open to listening.

"But from this moment and today, he is with us because we are happy with Diego Carlos and he had good performances last year. This year is the same idea.

"Maybe that can change with a good offer but it’s not in my mind to change something around him."

Ipswich complete loan signing of Phillips from Manchester City

Ipswich Town have completed the signing of midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City on a season-long loan.

The Athletic reported on Thursday Phillips, 28, was set to undergo a medical at Ipswich after the two club agreed the terms of a move. City will not have a recall option included in the agreement.

He could be available to make his debut during Saturday’s Premier League opener against Liverpool.

“I’ve had some great conversations with players I know here and also with the manager, who I have obviously heard a lot about, and I’m excited to be here and be part of his team, playing how he likes to play the game,” Phillips said.

“The conversations with Kieran McKenna and (CEO) Mark Ashton have been really good and I followed Ipswich’s season closely last year, so I know the journey the club has been on and it’s a great story which I’m now excited to be a part of.

“I want to play as many games as possible, enjoy playing football again and help the team win as many games as possible in the Premier League.”

Man City unclear on Joao Cancelo future - Guardiola

Latest transfer news (101)

Pep Guardiola has suggested that Manchester City are uncertain on the future of Joao Cancelo, who has spent the last 18 months away from the club on loan deals.

The Portugal international spent the second half of the 2022-23 season on loan at Bayern Munich before joining Barcelona for the 2023-24 campaign.

The 30-year-old scored four goals in 42 appearances for Barcelona last season and was previously a key player at City, for whom he has made 154 first-team appearances.

"In training we say 'hi', we talk, and trained," Guardiola said. "That's all. About what's going to happen, it depends on his agent and the club. And at the end, if he has to stay, we will treat him like all the other players we have done since I've been here."

Cancelo joined City from Juventus in 2019 and has won three Premier League titles with the club.

Ugarte left out of PSG squad amid Man Utd speculation

Latest transfer news (114)

Manuel Ugarte has been left out of Paris Saint-Germain's matchday squad for their opening fixture of the new season against Le Havre.

The Uruguayan midfielder faces an uncertain future at the Parc des Princes, and he has been subject to interest from Manchester United this summer.

However, The Athletic reported earlier this month that United cooled their interest due to a gap in valuations.

Ugarte was not listed as one of PSG's injured players ahead of tonight's fixture with Le Havre. Also among those not included in the 21-man squad list were Nordi Mukiele and Danilo Pereira, who equally have uncertain futures in Paris.

Gabriel Moscardo, a new signing from Corinthians who has only recently returned to full fitness following injury, also misses out.

PSG start the defence of their Ligue 1 title tonight at 8pm UK time.

Ipswich complete Szmodics signing from Blackburn

Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers.

The Athletic reported Ipswich had agreed a deal to sign Szmodics for an initial fee of £9million ($11.6m) plus add-ons.

The 28-year-old has signed a four-year deal that runs until 2028 and could make his debut during Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool.

“There’s always been interest since I was a kid, but it just felt right this time with the challenge of the Premier League,” Szmodics said.

“After speaking to a couple of the lads, including Lewis Travis who was here last season, they just pushed me and said that I need to come and work under this manager, which is something I can’t wait to do.

“It’s every boy’s dream to play in the Premier League and I’ve always said to my friends, family and agents that I’ll get to the top one day.

“There’s nothing more I want than to score at Portman Road for Ipswich Town. I am over the moon to be here and looking forward to the season ahead.”
